Monday Movie Review - Valkyrie

Valkyrie with Tom Cruise. This is an excellent movie based on the true story of the plot to overthrow Hitler from within Germany. What courage these men had for trying to overcome what they knew was not right with Hitler and his armies. This movie makes me want to research the subject more, it was very interesting. I would highly recommend this movie. Children would not enjoy this movie

Alan Hall Presentation

Picture from MarketStar.com

Alan Hall was a speaker for The Franklin Group Real Estate today. Other area realtors were invited as well. Alan is the Founder and owner of MarketStar Corporation. He has Thousands of employees.
Here are some of his thoughts:
  • Be humble when solving problems and do not let others distract you.
  • Be accountable for your own success, failure and actions.
Remember the 5 C's when hiring or evaluating yourself
  1. Be Competent
  2. Be Capable of Growth
  3. Be Committed
  4. Have the right Chemistry 5. Have Character (integrity etc)

HAVE A VISION: Who are you? Where are you going?

Describe it on Paper and then Achieve it

SWAT method: What are your Strength's, Weaknesses, threats and opportunities?

Life is a long journey and this a PROCESS. What is your strategy to improve on weaknesses, utilize strength and to determine opportunity and overcome threats? You must have Goals and clear objectives. Be able to answer these questions about your goals: Who, What, Where, When, Why and How much.

What are your resources? Teamwork, associations, reports, communications, Yourself.

Reward yourself when you achieve your goals. Determine what your culture and Values are.
Love of God, Self, Family, Work, Community. Balance your life. Meditate and Give it all you can.

I really enjoyed this class. One of my goals this year is to work harder and smarter so I can create more business and help more people find homes. I have been blessed to have the clients that I have now and in the past....they are all such great people and my life is richer because of them. Thank you, friends.

Ramblin Thoughts I ran across

We'll be friends until we are old and Senile......
Then we will be New Friends.

Don't Hit Kids.
No. Seriously.
They have guns now.

Hero Lifesaver

I ran into my Sister in Law Diane's daughter and her husband last week while we were out to dinner with Kimberlee. I haven't seen Nicole or Don for about 3 years. In that time Nicole became very ill with Kidney disease and was on dialysis daily for months. Her mother Diane, and sister Angie tried to become donors of their kidneys but were unable.

Nicole and Don hadn't been married for too long, but Don bravely and lovingly gave his wife one of his kidneys. From what I have heard, the surgery is tougher on the donor than the recipient.
He is a Major HERO Life Saver in my book. I really admire Don for his bravery to do such a noble thing for his wife. Nicole looks great and Happy. What a cute couple.

We got put at a very large table for the 3 of us, so Scott invited Don and Nicole to sit and break bread with us. Because the restraunt was so behind in their seating, they gave us a free bloomin onion. We really enjoyed visiting with Don and Nicole. I wish them both Health and Happiness for the new Year.

New Grandpuppy

Kimberlee and Kai are the proud new parents of their 2nd puppy. A Red lab puppy named Athena (in greek mythology Athena is the Wife to Zeus). Athena will be the sister to Zeus...(wife just doesn't seem right when we are talking about a puppy...unless you have read the Twilight Book series then you would understand) Zeus is an 8 month old Golden Lab. This photo is the day that they picked her up. They drove all the way to Colorado through a blizzardy snow storm to get her. She is 8 weeks old in this photo.

MORE Christmas photos

Denny caught the first fish on Grandma's new Wii fishing game...I think it was a Bass. Diane was sitting in the corner playing with Faith, Oakley and Lexiie her cute grandkids. I need to look on my camera to see where the others are hiding.

The Saturday after Christmas we went to Grandmas LaNae and Grandpa Arnolds house for a family party. There was great food and great fun AND Great family. It was so nice seeing everyone. Arnold had some fun games, I even won a few bucks playing the ring toss game!!
I LOVE all my relatives! I am so lucky that they are part of my family!

Cindy's Friday Movie Review on Sunday

Over the Christmas Break my family all got together and went and saw the movie Marley and Me!!
What an excellent family movie. I listened to the audio book and the book is much more descriptive of the dog and family - so to be honest with you, I actually enjoyed the book more.
But....the movie was awesome too. Anyone who has ever had a dog will be able to relate to this movie. It will make you laugh, and cry. They cast Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston perfectly. This was very enjoyable and definitely worth going to. Take the kids!! By the way, this is based on a true story - those are always the best movies in my book!

Mi Familia

Kai and Kimberlee (the Xray Queen)
Yellie and Kimberlee
Linh and Denny
Karen and Dustino
Yellie, Denny, Karen and Kimberlee - Cute Kids!!

Due to bad roads our Christmas party at Grandma LaNaes was changed from Friday to Saturday. Unfortunately Karen and Dustin had to head back to California so we all went to a movie in Ogden and then went back to Kai and Kimberlees and visited. It was the last Hoorah with all the kids together -it was great being with them. Denny left on January 5. He drove back to North Carolina and arrived safely on the 10th.

Karen & Dustins New Home

Do you think Karen & Yellie have missed each other?

Karen & Danielle in front of Karen's new home in California. It was great`weather and we got to have an early Thanksgiving with Karen and Dustin. Boy, is Karen a good cook. The home is a beautiful 4 bedroom rambler in a new neighborhood. They are having a blast setting up their home, and now they get to bring their dog Bronco home with them. Bronco has been with the trainer for quite a few months now...he will be an expert bird dog.

Lessons a Millionaire Taught Me

Yesterday I had the opportunity to go to the Salt Lake Women's Council of Realtors Business Resource Meeting and Luncheon. What a treat!! They had a chef named Rob... he is a one man show for catering - he wants to keep his business small and his food great...the food was AMAZING!! There were 2 yummy salads, a ceasar and an amazing garden salad(beautiful)...fresh green beans sauteed and they had bits of cheese and other delicious things, 4 different pastas and sauces, that he was making right there...the chicken alfredo was to die for!!!...and delicious fresh berries with lace (a tasty lite cream sauce). Many of the realtors have used him for baby showers, parties at home etc....I definitely need to get his number if I ever have an event at my place!!

The speaker was an internationally known author - Richard Paul Evans. He talked about the important lessons a millionare taught him - geared for women. It was so interesting - I wish all of my daughters could have been there. We talked with Richard after the meeting and he has agreed to come and speak to our Ogden Chapter of Women's Council of Realtors in March...it will be on the 2nd Wednesday. If anyone is interested in hearing him please let me know.

A few of my notes on some of the things he talked about are: 1) Always know how much $$ you have 2) Know where your $$ comes from (don't be afraid to look in the margins...there are always creative ways of making money....great Coffee cans of Gold Story 3) Know where your $$ is going (have a nest egg)_ 4) Know what your $ is doing (invest) 5) Keep a portion of everything you earn...have a Wealth account 6) Give back 6) Find whats working and Depart from what is not 7)The sin of the desert is knowing where the water is and not telling someone (Share your knowledge) 8) 7 Golden Words are: "Is that the Best you can do?" - most companies and people are willing to give a break on the cost of services or items, just ask 9) There is always opportunity....even in a bad economy 10) Daughter - Never put a wishbone where a backbone ought to be.

One of Richard Paul Evans books is - The 5 Lessons a Millionaire Taught Me about Life and Wealth. I have not read it yet, but in skimming through it, alot of what he talked about at the meeting is in this book. He is also the Author of the Christmas Box. Some of the proceeds from his books go to fund the Christmas Box Houses throughout Utah (that is the Give Back part).

Realtor RESCUE 911

I can't believe it would happen twice in a lifetime!!! The last time something similar happened I was about 11 years old!!! Today, I ran into my brand new office and was the only one there. I needed to call Lezley and tell her I would pick her up - I had a Women's Council of Realtors board meeting and then a Class that I was heading out to....Lezley was coming with me. Before I was to call Lezley I needed to use the brand new restroom...we just moved in yesterday and obviously I was the first to use the new facility....No Toilet Paper, No problem...I took in my box of Kleenex. I looked at my phone and thought "I'll call Lezley while I in the restroom"....not cool....so I set the phone about 4 feet from the bathroom door on our new reception desk.

Once business was finished I went to open the door and the doorknob wouldn't budge...I pulled, I pushed, I shook the door....It wouldn't budge!!!! Aaaaaaaagh! I was the only one there....Lezley knew I had a meeting below and I hadn't called her....Scott knew I was going down the hill....the phone was 4 feet away, but on the other side of the door. So I banged on the wall between the bathroom and Subway next door....3 different times I banged on the wall for quite awhile (they figured we were hanging up pictures or doing more construction). So I looked around the bathroom and thought, I am going to have to find my own way out....no one knows that I am here!!! I decided to try and take the doorknob off, I looked to see if my belt buckle would work (I even looked, oh yeah, I don't have a belt on)...I looked to see if my metal buttons on my wool jacket would work....they were too thick (besides, I had just sewn a button on right before I left, it fell off when I put the jacket on).

I looked at the soap dispenser, it is brand new and had the little key taped onto the top of it. It was very teeny....so I worked for quite awhile and got one screw off....plus tried banging on the Subway wall again!!!.....

While I was working on taking the other screw off the door, I heard someone come in my office...I started yelling, HELLO!! HELP!!! HELP!!! A man's voice said, "Uhh hello, is everything okay?" "No" I screamed, "I am stuck in here, the door knob is jammed and I can't get out of here! Can you help me??" The man jiggled the outside and I continued to try to unscrew the 2nd screw in the knob. I asked the man to go and see if they had any tools at Subway...they said that they didn't have any and to just call the Contractor....AAAaaagh!!! He said "Who is in there? Is it you Lezley?"...I then asked the man to call Lezley.....he told her I was locked in the bathroom and to please bring over a screwdrive and a hatchet....She laughed hysterically and said she would bring some tools and her husband over.

As I was working on the door I asked the man through the door....by the way...."Who are you??"....It was Chad Phillips one of our local Title guys from American Secure Title company...he almost drove by, but decided to stop in and see the new office....I am so glad he stopped!! I told him that if we called the fire department it would be in the Morgan Newspaper - LOCAL REALTOR STUCK IN BATHROOM....he said it could be our little industry secret...but no...I am going to blog about the trauma for the whole world to know!

Soon, I got the doorknob off and Chad pulled the other side out but the door knob plunger was stuck into the door frame and wouldn't budge. I looked through the little hole, Chad Phillips, Lezley and Chad Rowser and Lynnette from Subway were all standing there laughing. As I looked at Chad Phillips through the little hole in the door, I asked, "By the Way, How is the Title business lately?" It was rather humorous.

Chad Rowser had a leatherman tool, everyone was taking turns working on the door. It took awhile, but we finally got the door open. I had been in there about 30 minutes and thus was late for my WCR meeting....but at least I was free! At least I had water and a place to sit....oh yeah....there was a little step ladder in there, I couldn't even sit on that, my butt was too big to sit on the ladder between the handrails.

Thanks to Chad Phillips - He gets my HERO of the Week award! You saved my Life!! Who knows how long I would have been in there had he not stopped in. Thank heaven for our title people. This incident is a lot funnier now that I am out of my trapped room! Hopefully next time the Subway people will come running if I am pounding on the wall!!

NOW.....The rest of the story......
When I was about 11 - the summer before Jr. High school. My family was on the way to Flaming Gorge for a vacation. We stopped at a gas station that had a pay bathroom. We paid a nickle and took turns on the one nickle. My Mom and Brenda went back to the car while I finished up. Once I was ready to go there were 4 or 5 locks on the door plus the lock on the doorknob...I tried everything but couldn't get the door open.

I was there for awhile when through the frosted glass window I saw someone walk by, I shook the door and yelled for help. A kind man was trying to get the door open from the other side. My Dad jumped out of our car and yelled "Get away from there, my daughter is in there".
"I know" yelled the man - "she is stuck and can't get out". Soon I could hear and see the shadows of my whole family outside the door (same type of laughter as today)! Then.....this was the traumatic part.....my mom said "Oh my gosh....I am NOT going to pay another Nickle just to get her out of there!!" Then I saw them all leave!!!!!! I remember this a clear as clear! (It's okay Mom, no reflection on you, I know money was tight ;-) )

My heart was racing as I looked around the gas station bathroom...I still remember the thoughts that ran through my head....Where will I sleep....How will I get food to eat...I can't believe they left me!!! But what seemed like forever, finally they came back with the gas station man...He had a key and unlocked the door! It was so embarassing walking out of that restroom! Boy did I get teased that whole trip!

Funny thing....Today, all the memories of my 11 year old incident came flooding back as I sat on the new tile floor trying to get the doorknob off! Hooray....I am a Survivor - twice!

DID YOU KNOW..

Stewardesses is the longest word that is typed using only the left hand?

The only word in the English language with five vowels in a row is queuing, unless you spell meow "m-i-a-oo-u" (as some dictionaries do), in which case miaouing also has five.

Maine is the only state whose name is just one syllable.

Just thought I would share that with you. ck

More Thanksgiving Thanks

Hey...This is the first time I put photos on all by myself...no one on my tech support team is around...I did okay, other than the photo of my cute niece Taylor got put on twice. (**Tech Support Karen fixed the double picture..) :) If you look behind Taylors head you can see a pix of the turkey that she drew for me and put on my wall. It was so great having her here to decorate for me. What an artist, just like her Mom Brenda!!

Taylor also spent several hours making the place cards for Thanksgiving dinner. She made drawings of each person with our name on it. I will try and scan some in (when my tech support is around) so you can see how cute they were.

We had the most wonderful dinner at Kai's parents home...Gray and Linda Jensen. They were so kind to have all of us...Kai & Bimms, Me, Scott and Yellie...Grandma LaNae and Gpa Arnold, and we were MAJOR lucky to get all 3 of Brenda's darling daughters...Taylor flew in from Vancouver Washington (boy were her arms tired)...Heidi came up from BYU and Kendra came down from Utah State. Brenda had to work all weekend so she had Taylor join us...What a TREAT!

After a Yummy dinner, Taylor teamed up with Linda vs. Kimberlee and Cindy at a fun game of pool (as in billiards - smile)...Guess what...Kimberlee and Cindy won...but just barely...Linda is a pro!!! We also played a game of Blockus with Kendra, Gray, Cindy, and Scott. The girls also went out with some carrots and looked at all of Linda's horses. This was a laid back nice day. We had a great time. The next day after Thanksgiving...we all went and saw the movie Twilight....Excellent Movie...we all enjoyed it...it is very close to the first book.

Grandma and the Girls

Thanksgiving this year was extra special!!!! It is the first Thanksgiving dinner that I have ever had with Brenda's girls and the first Thanksgiving in over 20 years that I have had with my Mom....Grandma LaNae. Grandma LaNae has always been so sweet to my girls. Kimberlee was dropped off on her way home from college a few years ago and stayed overnight...her and Gma stayed up till 3 am watching movies and eating candy....Heidi and Kendra have had the same experience when we were talking about it....Wii games, movies and candy and talking and laughing....Who know Gma was such a Party Queen. We love you Grandma....Thanks for making Thanksgiving so special this year!

Hometown Hero of the Week

This Hero Blog is way past due. I learned of these heroic actions when I first started blogging. But of course, I didn't really blog for a few weeks after Karen set it up for me...anyway, enough rambling. Every Tuesday and Thursday nite I go to water aerobics with Kimberlee, while Scott and Kai work out in the Man Gym..... I got talking to a lady that is in my water aerobics class every week also. Her name is Angie.

For the past 13 years Angie has made a Thanksgiving dinner for anyone at an assisted living center who have no where to go for Thanksgiving or no family to come and see them. What started as a small thing has grown and grown each year. This year she cooked 7 turkeys and served over 210 people. About 20 were homebound, so she delivered it to them. Anyone is invited. It has grown and grown.

Angies son started helping her when he was 7 years old and still helps every year. 2 of the other ladies in our water class went and helped serve this year, and another woman baked pumpkin pies all day the day before and donated all the pies. Her small service has outgrown her kitchen, so her church lets her use their kitchen facilities. She said that it makes her heart swell with Joy and Happiness to help these people each year. After serving all of these people, Angie then goes home and prepares a nice Thanksgiving dinner for her immediate family.

Then...the week after Thanksgiving, Angie takes all the turkey bones and makes a lemon rice chicken soup and goes back and serves all the same people again. I asked if I could help serve next year and she said I can....I can't wait!!! What a wonderful lady...Angie is always so cheerful and fun to have around in our class...What an inspiration. What started as a small labor of love has grown so much and touched so many lives. Thanks ANGIE.....I don't even know her last name......it is probably something like Sweet Angel!!!!

MOVING ALONG...

Today I start moving into my New office!!! The Franklin Group Real Estate - Morgan office is now moving to 288 State Street in Morgan Utah USA our phone number will stay the same. The building is brand new...no more peeling paint, leaking ceilings, walls and doors, no more freezing all winter and roasting all summer. AND...the paint and carpeting are beautiful.

The best thing is, we are right next door to SUBWAY!!! I can just walk next door to grab my deli roast beef round with one slice of provolone (in Danielle's case Pomeranian Cheese).... and a coke! I walk in and they automatically just start making it, every once in a blue moon I order something different just to throw them off. They make a great sandwich.

***STORY of the Pomeranian Cheese: Several years ago I was with my daughter, Danielle, at Subway, she ordered her sandwich and wanted pomeranian cheese on it...The Subway worker said "What did you want on it" ....Danielle said "I want Pomeranian on it"....The subway worker said we don't have that kind of cheese ...Yellie said "Yes you do, its right there" ...The lady answered, that is not pomeranian cheese it is provolone...Pomeranian is a Dog....Danielle was very embarrassed, we laughed.....We have gotten many miles of teasing out of that one.

Monday Rambling......

DID YOU KNOW....There are 1,218 peanuts in a single twenty eight ounce jar of Jif peanut butter!!! And....Peanut butter's high protein content draws moisture from your mouth - which is why, in the end, it always sticks to the roof of your mouth.........I just thought I'd share that with you.

Amish Friends

I am so LUCKY and BLESSED!!! I had a great experience today! I have been looking forward to this day since last week. My sister-in-law Diane, who is an avid Quilter like me has made a friend through her work - Nancy Good. Nancy invited Diane to come and bring some friends (I am lucky enough to be one) to her home for a fabulous brunch to visit with Nancy and her relatives.

Nancy Good is a FANTASTIC cook. The brunch was so delicious and amazing!! Aunt Mary also made a sausage breakfast cup that was wonderful- I will get the recipe and post it for all. Besides Nancy and her relatives - Diane and her Mom, Joy attended along with Diane's co-worker DeAnne, Myself and My Mom, LaNae and my daughters - Danielle and Kimberlee. Nancy is amazing - she went through all of our names and remembered all the names after only being introduced once. She is a vibrant, fun and a free spirit (as she puts it). My regret is that she is leaving in a month for Texas. She and her husband travel frequently with their job. They have been in Utah for a year and their job is almost complete.

Nancy was raised Amish and had her Uncle Alvin and Aunt Mary Ebersol come out to visit her from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The Ebersol's are true Amish and were so delightful to visit with. They traveled by train and will be in Utah for 8 days. Uncle Alvin owns a carpentry shop and builds furniture for a living. Ebersol chairs. I told him I would like to buy a chair - He said I will need to hurry as he hopes to retire in the next year or so. Alvin also has a side business where he builds coffins for the Amish. They live their lives very simply. The coffins are just plain wood boxes. Very unlike the traditional coffins that are mostly used today. Alvin also builds wood vaults for the coffins to sit in (similar to the cement vaults that we use).

Alvin said that this spring on the History channel will be a show about the History of Abraham Lincoln. They came and filmed one of the coffins that he built and it will be shown on this feature. The coffin is the same type as what President Lincoln was buried in. (Did you know that Lincoln was buried 6 times?) It will be explained on the show.

The Ebersols were in traditional Amish dress. Alvin was wearing Black slacks and a longsleeved simple green shirt. He had a long beard underneath his chin with the front of his face clean shaved and his hair combed straight. Mary was in a long solid green dress with a black long apron. She had a white amish hat with a ribbon that hung down over each ear. They mostly speak Pennsylvania Dutch when they are at home which is close to the Swiss German language.

Aunt Mary also has a business. She is a seamstress who makes coats, jackets, vests and slacks. She mostly makes them to order for the Amish, but takes orders from others as well. She was working on slacks and a Jacket as we visited. She uses an electric sewing machine for most of it, but it is powered by a battery and sometimes by solar power. They do not use electricity - not because of a religious belief but because it is tradition to live as simply as possible. Mary also likes to quilt but doesn't have as much time for it as she used to, as her business keeps her quite busy. She is a beautiful Seamstress. Mary also taught DeAnne how to crochet and showed us some of the crocheted items that she has been working on.

Horses are a something that Mary really enjoys also, although Alvin does not like her main driving horse much. Mary does not like to pull to the side of the road when there is traffic so she keeps her spot on the road in her horse and buggy. Although, sometimes her horse gets frightened by the big trucks. If I ever can make it to Pennsylvania again, Mary said she would take me for a ride in her horse and buggy and take me to the best quilt shop in the area. I hope to be able to go there and visit her someday soon.

Besides brunch and visiting - Diane brought a few quilts to show that she is working on. I also brought several quilts that I am working on to show. The favorite seemed to be my modified Amish 9 patch (the brights in it aren't true solids - they were batiks along with the traditional black fabric) Mary also quite liked an applique quilt I had - I will get the pattern to send to her.
There was also a puzzle set up that we all worked on as we visited - that was nice also - very relaxing.

The children attend school through the 8th grade and then usually get jobs working in the village shops or restraunts or learn a trade such as carpentry and also work on their farms. There is plenty of land for the children to live their lives on as well.

There was also a moment for tears for all of us. Conversation went to schools and then to a tragedy. Two Years ago the tragic shooting of all the little girls in the Amish schoolhouse in Lancaster was where these sweet folks live. 6 little girls were killed and several others left seriously wounded. The Ebersols know all of the families and the children that this horrible tragedy happened to - the wounds are still so raw and emotional. These are their friends and family. They said that it really affected all of Pennsylvania - we told them that it affected the whole world and we gave our sympathy and love to them and all of the families. Also we talked about how wonderful their example of forgiveness was - to all the world. It was so sad what they all went through.

The Ebersols said that the outpouring of love from around the world was astonishing. There was a very very poor congregation from another country that sent a $1 donation from each person in their congregation - this was a huge huge amount of money for those people, as they all live in severe poverty. The money was given to the Amish families whose children were killed and injured. The Amish families in turn gave most of the money to the widow and children of the gunman who commited this serious act. This reminded me of the story of the Widow's mite in the scriptures.

Nancy, Alvin and Mary were all so kind and generous of their time and friendship. I had such a wonderful day. I only regret that I hadn't met Nancy a year ago when she moved here. I hope that I can see them all again or at least keep in contact with them. I could have sat and visited for many more hours. We all hugged as if we were longtime friends. They are wonderful people and my life is better because I was able to have met them all! Also, Thanks Diane, for thinking of me with your invitation. What a treat!! What a Great day.

Welcome to the World - Daxton Reece

Jessie and Jennie had a beautiful baby boy in November. I was out of town most of the month, but I finally got the quilt done for Baby Daxton Reece . Jessie is my nephew and used to come and spend time with us each summer when we lived in Wyoming. He is a great guy and will be a wonderful dad. Jennie is a sweetheart and you can tell that she is a fantastic Mom! Congratulations!

Cindy's Friday Morning Movie Review

Bold

-The Curious Case of Benjamin Button-
This movie was 2 hours and 48 minutes long, but was worth every second. I think this is Brad Pitt's best movie ever. It is a story about a man who lives life backwards. (It has some great twists and turns and makes you think.)
Benjamin is born as an 80 year old man and left on the steps of an old folks home, as he grows, he fits in with the older people - as he gets younger, he sets out to explore the world. Because the story was so wonderful, the time passed quickly watching the show .
This morning, my family was still talking about the movie. I don't think young children would enjoy this show.
Let me know what you think.
